Despite my interest and willingness to read or watch books and movies I often find myself passing them by due to lack of time. That was why I resolved to under take “The Project.” It works like this:
- Choose 26 nearly random movies
- One for each letter in the alphabet
- Try for balance between “recent movies” and “old classics”
- You should not have seen them before
- They should be films that you would not usually choose to watch.
That last point is the clincher. I’d usually watch a host of sci-fi, fantasy, or superhero films, but that clause forces me to broaden my horizons. It doesn’t have to mean you have to deliberately watch dross – I’ve got my reasons for picking each film on the list – it just means you pick outside your normal comfort zone.
My list is:
- Affair To Remember, An (1957)
- Buckaroo Banzai, The Adventures of (1984)
- Chicago (2002)
- Dogma (1999)
- Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)
- Finding Nemo (2003)
- Guns of Navarone, The (1961)
- High Fidelity (2000)
- Invisible Man (1933)
- Joe’s Apartment (1996)
- Kind Hearts and Coronets (1949)
- L.A. Confidential (1997)
- Maltese Falcon, The (1941)
- Naked City, The (1948)
- Ocean’s Eleven (2001)
- Princess Bride, The (1987)
- Quadrophenia (1979)
- Rio Bravo (1959)
- Smokey and the Bandit (1977)
