Young Justice

More details of Young Justice Season Two

Young Justice co-Producer Greg Weisman has updated fans on the current status of the show in the wake of Cartoon Network’s announcement that they have commissioned a second season. The new series is a special 10-part mini-series called Young Justice: Invasion. Weisman revealed that work has already begun on the Invasion series.

We immediately began work on this new season last week, and are breaking approximately (but not quite) one episode per day. The creative team is fundamentally the same as for Season One.

And though, of course, we will be introducing many new characters episodically in Season Two (just as we do episodically in Season One), I don’t want to give the impression that this is some spin-off featuring, I dunno, the League or something, in the same Earth-16 setting. Invasion IS the second season of Young Justice and absolutely features our “Team”. Episode 26 of Season One is time-stamped “December 31″. Episode 1 of Season Two will be time-stamped “January 1″, in essence picking up right where we left off.

As of the moment Young Justice is a repeat cycle of the first 9 episodes and episodes 10 and 11 are in post-production. All of April’s showing are repeats. CN appear to be showing the repeats in sequence – if they show all the material it’ll be into mid-May before they repeat the repeats or they segway into new material.  The rest of the 26-episodes have been written and the dialogue has been recorded.

Quotes

Superboy: There’s a lot of history here, isn’t there?
Red Tornado: Yes. This is where it all started. When the Justice League was first formed, this was their base of operations.

Superboy (after getting shot): I guess that answers that! Ghosts… can’t shoot you.

Synopsis "Haunted"

Previously: Seeking to prove themselves to their mentors Aqualad, Kid Flash, and Robin collaborated to investigate the Cadmus genetic laboratories in Washington, DC. They discovered and liberated a teenage clone of Superman called Superboy. Batman recognised the potential in the new group as a covert team able to go where the high-profile Justice League is otherwise unable to operate. Batman has now brought the youths to the Justice League’s old Mount Justice headquarters to brief them on their new mission and their new team-mates…

Young Justice statistics

Producer Greg Weisman has posted some interesting statistics from the first season of Young Justice. All 26 episodes of the first season are written and have had their dialogue recorded. They are now in an array of states ranging from aired (episode 1-7) to being storyboarded (episodes 25-26).He also noted that:

In Season One, we have 179 named characters from the DC Universe. That’s an average of 6.9 characters introduced per episode, though of course some introduce more and some less.

We used 66 actors total. That’s 2.7 characters per actor, though that’s a particularly meaningless number, as some characters don’t speak or only grunt. Also many actors only performed a single role, while others performed considerably more than 2.7. The record holder (with 11 roles under his belt) is Kevin Michael Richardson with 11, beating out Jeff Glenn Bennett by one.

Much more is contained with Weisman’s original post.

Another character confirmed for Young Justice

The producers said there would be lots of characters the first season and here’s confirmation that at least one new male character is on the way.

It appears that somebodies agent has let slip the casting a new series regular for Young Justice. dcwomenkickingass have the scoop that Logan Grove has been cast as Beast Boy in the series. Now the interesting thing about this is the timing – as of Jan 10th they’d completed dialogue recording up to episode 24 or so of the current series. So a casting announcement now could actually mean its for the second season. Either that or CN have only now been allowed Grove’s agent to announce it.

Young Justice at New York Toy Fair

News and photographs are filtering out of last weekend’s New York Toy Fair. The first announcement was the sad news that the 10-year old Justice League Unlimited line was being retired in favour of the new Young Justice line. Retailers are getting excited about Young Justice and unfortunately the JLU line just isn’t doing enough numbers for  Mattel any more. the Mattel’s own comments can be found on their Matte Collector website.

As bummed as we are that JLU is ending, we’re really excited about the premiere of the Young Justice™ line. You told us you liked the animated TV series and we know you’re gonna love the new figures based on the series! We premiered 4 new 4.25” figures, bringing the total shown to 8 out of the 12 you’ll need to build the awesome Collect & Connect™ diorama, The Hall of Justice™. We also revealed 4 more two-packs that include A-list characters and 3 of the all-new 6” figures sculpted by the Four Horseman. These figures come with incredible display stands and tons of accessories for unlimited display options.

The list of figures revealed at the New York Toy Fair from the Matte Collector site is shown below. Included in the prototypes are several figures that could be considered spoilers for future episodes.

DCU Young Justice™

DCU Young Justice™ Basic Figure Assortment

  • Black Canary™
  • Captain Atom™
  • Superboy™
  • Vandal Savage™

DCU Young Justice™ 2-Pack Assortment

  • Aquaman™ & Aqualad™
  • Batman™ & Robin™
  • The Flash & Kid Flash™
  • Ra’s Al Ghul™ & Cheshire™

DCU Young Justice 6″ Figure Assortment

  • Aqualad™
  • Artemis™
  • Robin™

The inclusion of Ra’s Al Ghul and Vandal Savage would suggest that they are part of the mysterious Light. Not included in that list, but already announced are 4.25″ figures of Speedy and Icicle Jr . As previously announced there will be 12 4.25″ separates in the first year which will each containing a fragment of the Hall of Justice. So we now know 8 of the 12. The first wave will be Robin, Speedy, Aqualad, and Icicle Jr. Toy Fair has just announced Black Canary, Captain Atom, Superboy, and Vandal Savage which could make a second wave.

Photograph galleries of the Mattel display can be found at sites including Action Figure Pictures and  Toy New International. During AFi’s long (30 min) interview about JLU with Mattel’s Scott Neitlich it was mentioned that the very first Young Justice toy will be a San Diego Comic-Con exclusive (July) with the rest of the line launching in the fall – plenty of time for Christmas, but still quite a while off.

A new Young Justice section

I have added a central page for all our static Young Justice content – profiles, timelines, etc. Episode reviews will continue to appear on the front page as normal. I’ll try and get those listed in due course.

New articles up at the moment include:

I plan to keep these updated as we go along and to add new material along with the reviews of new episodes. So I’ll post a profile of a new character instead of a section on them in the usual review. This new site is added under the banner of “The Atlas of the Multiverse” (well it’s actually a reprise of a section from the old site which is no longer online), but at the moment only the Earth-16 (Young Justice) section is live.

A lot of these changes relate to “under-the-hood” mechanics of WordPress. Previously I’ve only been able to have “posts” which appear in the blog stream or “pages” which are static. However, the ability to add custom post types to WordPress has recently appeared. I first experimented with this when I switched the Galleries over to a custom post-type and ditched the former NextGen powered galleries (it was a nice plug-in, but was increasingly too far outside the WordPress core for my liking). I’m rather pleased with the results so I’ve now created a custom post type for Character Profiles.

By default new profiles will be static and won’t be part of the usual front-page stream, but that may change. I also intend to do the same for the DC Animated Universe (Justice League & Justice League Unlimited), but that’ll take time to start.

Quotes

Tuppence Terror: <unnhh> Son, you do pack a wallop…
Superboy: Lady, I’m not your son.
Tuppence Terror: And I ain’t no lady.

Tuppence Terror: Big mistake pissant!
Kid Flash: That’s Kid Pissant to you, sister!

Synopsis "Stopover"

Previously in “Independence Day” and “Fireworks”: Aqualad, Robin, and Kid Flash has hoped that their induction into the Justice League would actually mean something, but it turned out to be more symbolic than real. They sought to prove themselves to the League so they infiltrated Cadmus Labs and liberated a teenage clone of Superman called Superboy. Their fight with Cadmus leveled the above ground facility and brought a response from the full Justice League. Batman told them that they were being stood down, but Aqualad and co stood up to him and for what they had achieved together.

Next year’s presents: Young Justice figures

Unfortunately the first wave of Young Justice action figures weren’t released in time for this year’s Christmas. However, details of the 2011 line have been released.

  • These are being produced by Mattel who has the license to do all non-DC Direct DC Comics action figures. This means that they have the opportunity to sync the figure scale with that of the earlier, and still produced, Justice League Unlimited (now Justice League Universe) toyline at 4.25″and the DC Universe line at 6″.
  • There will be 12-figures in the first-year 4.25″ line. Each figure in the 4.25″ figures will include a piece of the Hall of Justice. This is part of something Mattel call “Collect-and-Connect” and creates a unified diorama to display your collection.
  • The 6″ line will be hyper-articulated and will be sculpted by the Four Hoursmen to closely match the animation style of the cartoon show.
  • The first wave will consist of Robin and Kid Flash plus Speedy and Icicle Jnr (characters from the opening movie). There will also be four twin-packs showing the sidekicks with their mentors (Batman and Robin, Aquaman and Aqualad, Flash and Kid Flash plus another to-be-announced pair). The 6″ line will include Robin, Aqualad, and Artemis.
