The 99

The 99 – A Cribsheet

Has anybody been reading Justice League/The 99? It’s the cross over mini-series featuring the Islamic inspired superhero group the 99 and DC Comics’ JLA. It’s one of those good old-fashioned “living on the same Earth, but only just met” out-of-continuity crossovers. That may sound disparaging, but it’s not meant to be. Admittedly the first issue was a bit OTT as everybody was dropped into their respective positions, but the remaining issues have been quite good.

Nevertheless, its biggest problem is that the background and origins of the characters are left to the shortest of captions and there isn’t much room for characterisation as such. So the following is a crib-sheet of information on members of the 99 put together as much for my reference as anything else.

The 99 (the short version)

There are a series of 99 magical gems called Noor Stones. Certain rare people are turned into superhumans via contact with a Noor Stone. A businessman/philanthropist called Doctor Ramzi Razem is searching for these people and has brought them together as a superhero team called The 99. However, the Noor Stones are also sought by an evil immortal called Rughal. He started off as Razem’s secret backer, but has since begun to openly oppose him.

There is an excellent official website for the 99 at www.the99.org which gives biographies and a lot more background than I’ve got room for here. Their comics are available for purchase as PDF files and there is a special The 99 Origins issue which is free.

Green Lantern: Really? I’d call it a typical Wednesday.

Synopsis "Stars of Tomorrow"

Members of the JLA and The 99 had gathered for its dedication, but the crowd suddenly rioted and Superman was uncharacteristically unhelpful. The JLA and the 99 were also collaborated to find out why Darr, one of the 99 with the power to project waves of pain, could not control his powers. Investigating an earthquake in South America leads Hawkman to meet another trio from the 99 who tell him that worldwide the geological upheavals are being caused by a newly activated Noor Stone.

Mad Man 1: You say mall, I say, “Maul!”
Mad Man 2: That joke would work a lot better if you had a word balloon over your head when you said it.

Synopsis "The City of Tomorrow"

The City of the Future is a brand new high-tech, eco-friendly metropolis built under a protective dome in the deserts of Arabian Peninsula. It has taken seven-years to build and has been partly designed by Waynetech’s Lucius Fox. Members of the Justice League and The Ninety-Nine superhero teams address the assembled press telling them how the City matches their own multi-cultural endeavourers. A man called Doctor Chou shakes hands with Superman, but is pushed away by the Ninety-Nine when they recognise him as a representative of Rughal, a man sworn to destroy them. Suddenly the crowd erupts into a senseless riot and the superheroes from both teams wade in to stop the spontaneous and unexplained violence.

JLA Solicitations for November 2010

DC has released their Brightest Day solicitations (including the JLA) for November 2010. JLA #51 features a great variant cover of Starman and Congorilla by David Mack (the subject may not be as pretty as his Supergirl cover, but it’s great to see all team members getting their cover turn). The other five Leaguers (Jesse, Donna, Batman/Dick, Jade, and Supergirl) it refers to are the direct surrogates of the heroes the Crime Syndicate are based on so that makes sense.

The solicitation for Generation Lost pretty much confirms that either Captain Atom or Magog is going to die (Magog’s title has just been cancelled, you do the math). It would appear to be a fairly definite conclusion to the White Lantern directive for Max, but the series isn’t even half over yet. The second part of the JLA/The 99 crossover is also solicited.

Naif Al-Mutawa: Superheroes inspired by Islam

TED is a conference of the best and brightest thinkers in the world who come together to share short talks on all manner of ideas, concepts, and thoughts. All these talks are put online at TED.com with the tagline “Ideas Worth Sharing.” Naif Al-Mutawa, creator of The-99, recently spoke at TED Global in Oxford, England. He described how, in his opinion, all superheroes are spun from Biblical archetypes (Superman as Moses, etc) and how he has sought to create a group of heroes based on the 99 attributes of Allah (and you thought the Legion of Superheroes had a large roster). He opens his talk by saying,

In October, 2010, the Justice League of America will be teaming up with The 99. Icons like Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and their colleagues will be teaming up icons Jabbar, Noora, Jami and their colleagues. It’s a story of intercultural intersections. And what better group to have this conversation than those that grew out of fighting fascism in their respective histories and geographies. As fascism took over Europe in the 1930s, an unlikely reaction came out of North America. As Christian iconography got changed, and swastikas were created out of crucifixes, Batman and Superman were created by Jewish young men in the United States and Canada also going back to the Bible.

It’s an interesting talk and especially relevant as The-99 will be crossing over with the Justice League in October. He introduces the concept of The 99 and outlines their origin which is fantastic primer for the upcoming crossover.

JLA and The-99 crossover cover

There are times that the glacial lead time in comic book publicity really appears silly. Case in point, as part of their pre-San Diego 2010 publicity DC have just released the cover for The-99/JLA crossover. “The what?” I hear you cry. It’s a crossover between an Islamic superhero team called The 99 (written by Naif Al-Mutawa) and DC’s JLA.

This above is the aforementioned cover to The 99/JLA #1 (written by Fabian Nicieza, art by Tom Derenick, out in October) and it looks really cool – and by the way, isn’t that the first time we’ve seen the new Wonder Woman alongside Superman and Batman. The cover also features Jabber, Noora, and Samda of The 99 and from the look of that shadow I’d say they were about to face Starro.

Its existence was actually was announced a full year ago in the pre-San Diego 2009 publicity. However, it’s taken that year to write, draw, colour, and edit. Not unusual for a comic-book series, but a killer in terms of buzz. I actually had to stop and think about whether it hadn’t already that been and gone. It’s the mentality that announces a product as soon as a the deal to develop that product is signed and not waiting for it to be fully developed and realised. Nevertheless, this could be a really interesting mini-series.

JLA and The-99 crossover planned

On their Source blog, DC have just announced a cross-over between the Justice League and The-99, an Islamic themed superhero group from the independent publisher.

THE 99 team, which debuted in June 2006, was recently identified by Forbes Magazine as one of the “Top 20 Trends Sweeping the Globe.” Not too shabby, huh? In THE 99 — created by Naif Al-Mutawa — are a team of superheroes, including Jabbar the Powerful and Noora the Light who must collect 99 gems encrypted with the wisdom and power of the ancient Dar Al-Hikma library of Baghdad, which are spread across the globe.

I’m really looking forward to this as its to be written by Fabian Nicieza who is one of the regular writers on The 99 so it should quite good. Spotted via Bleeding Cool, the BBC have an interview with The-99′s creator, Kuwaiti psychologist Dr Naif al-Mutawa.

Meanwhile, over on the Dwayne McDuffie ranch he’s posted a comment appended onto a preview of JLA #34 (his last issue).

I also suggest you take a look at some of the comments from your fellow comic book fans. Every once in awhile, I’m reminded how racially backwards a portion of our audience is and how important it is to… You know what? I’ll let them speak for themselves

I won’t repost the examples he cites (I don’t want to give them too much screen time). However, he is right to point out that there is a nasty, bigoted vein that runs through parts of comics fandom. I suppose its no different that any other walk of like, but the accessibility of comics creators makes it seem that much more personal.

I shudder to think how the negative brigade will react to a crossover with the 99, I just hope DC stays the course.
