Young Justice & GL panels at SDCC 2011

Warner Brothers TV have released their panel schedule for next months San Diego Comic Con. Included is a Young Justice panel on the Sunday (July 24th) with both producers and lead character designer in attendance.

SUNDAY, JULY 24, 2011 10:00–11:00 a.m. Young Justice Screening and Q&A – Robin, Aqualad, Kid Flash, Miss Martian, Red Arrow and Superboy — these aren’t your average sidekicks and this isn’t your average cartoon. In a short amount of time, and with just a small number of episodes, fans have embraced this new action-adventure series as Warner Bros. Animation has brought some of their favorite DC heroes to life. Following a special screening, producers Brandon Vietti (Batman: Under the Red Hood) and Greg Weisman (Gargoyles), lead character designer Phil Bourassa (Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths) and additional members of the creative team will be on hand to answer your burning questions on what the future holds for “the team.” Young Justice Season 1, Part 1 is available on DVD now. There is also a Green Lantern: The Animated Series panel. I wouldn’t normally mentioned it, but the still from the press kit is fantastic:

Now that’s what Hal Jordan should look like!

The panel description:

FRIDAY, JULY 22, 2011 – 2:00–3:00 p.m. Green Lantern: The Animated Series Video Presentation and Q&A – Warner Bros. Animation brings the Green Lantern to television in an all-new CG animated action series for Cartoon Network from world-renowned producer, artist and animator Bruce Timm (Batman: The Animated Series). Based upon the DC Comics super hero, Green Lantern: The Animated Series centers on Hal Jordan and his partner Kilowog who find themselves alone on the edge of the Guardian Frontier fighting off an invasion by the deadly Red Lantern Corps. Timm will headline a panel — moderated by Warner Bros. Animation’s Sam Register (Teen Titans) — which will also feature producer Giancarlo Volpe (Star Wars: The Clone Wars) and producer/story editor Jim Krieg (Ben 10: Alien Swarm). In addition to the Q&A, fans in attendance will be treated to footage of this highly anticipated new series prepared exclusively for Comic-Con. Don’t miss out, or you’ll be waiting ’til 2012. SDCC Panels: Young Justice transcript

DC Comics has uploaded podcasts of all of its San Diego panels to its website. That includes the WB Animation: Batman: Brave and the Bold Panel (MP3) which includes a few minutes of Young Justice intro by producers Greg Weisman and Brandon Vietti. It starts around the 24 minute mark if you want to jump straight to it, but the rest of the panel is quite fun and it’s only 32 minutes long. The rest of the hour-long slot was spent watching a new episode of Batman: The Brave and the Bold, which unfortunately, isn’t included on the podcast.

The panel was moderated by Sam Register, the Executive Vice-President for Creative Affairs at Warner Brothers Animation. He introduced the Young Justice segment by describing how it came about.

We were working on Batman when I got to the studio a couple of years ago and we had one show in production. We had to put other shows into development and somebody at Marvel messed up in my opinion because they let Greg Weisman [supervising producer of The Spectacular Spiderman] go. So I went hunting after Greg Weisman immediately. And at the same time Brandon Vietti, who has been working on many great shows, was directing on Under The Red Hood [the latest DCU direct-to-DVD feature]. I got these guys together. Now… they look alike, they think alike… and what came from this pairing was Young Justice.

Now guys, this is decidedly a different take on the other show [i.e. the comedy of Brave and the Bold which had just been discussed]. So what we wanted to do is, this show will be premiering this November, I think, on Cartoon Network. And what we wanted to do today, because you are fans of DC and Animation DC, we wanted to give you guys the oppurtunity to share for the first time some animation from what the Young Justice series will look like.

Greg Weisman and Brandon Vietti then take over the microphone, but its hard to tell which one is which. I think Vietti may be the one with the slightly deeper voice. Sorry if I’ve got them back to front.

Vietti: We’ve been working on this show for about a year now. It’s all about secrets and lies and we’re going to share a few secrets with you right now.

An SDCC weekend of News Tweets

Another Comic-Con has passed us by. From the outside looking-in the entire social media and real time blogging was heavily evident this year as it was easier than ever to follow events via live bloggings by the major sites and the flurry of twitter postings from individual people. People were posting pictures to flickr although it’ll probably take a few days for people without wifi to get home an upload their photographs. As they have done in previous years, DC was posting podcasts of their panels to their website – ignore the dates on the podcasts, they are actually from 2009. Maybe next year they’ll finally stream the panels on the web.

We got hints about the roll call of James Robinson’s Justice League, but there seems to have been more Justice Society news than then Justice League news (re: my previous observation). As an experiment this year I tweeted (“posted”) the more salient news items on twitter rather than blogging them one at a time. I’ve included an archive list of them below.

I usually tweet from within my wordpress blog using a rather nice plug in called tweetable, but this weekend I’ve been trying out Tweetdeck. What amazed me was watching the stream of tweets from people watching the Justice League marathon on Boomerang. There is ususally a background buzz of people “Watching Justice League”, but this weekend that buzz became a flood. I just hope the network folks notice how popular the show is.
