Justice League comic-book at SDCC 2010

All the attention, in terms of Justice League news from SDCC, has so far been on Young Justice with the news of its preview, casting, and that Peter David will be writing episodes. That isn’t to say that there hasn’t been JLA and Generation Lost news coming out from DC’s panels, but those titles have established writers and are running quite nicely with their long-term storylines.

From the DC Universe panel  (CBR, Newsarama) we learnt that for Judd Winick Generation Lost is “pretty much all I’m doing.” Which raises the question of when he finds time to write Power Girl. There is an arc devoted to Ice coming up and Captain Atom gets come more screen time. Aaron Lopresti will be drawing an issue that features “22 pages of the JLI fighting the Metal Men, wall-to-wall. ”

At the DC Universe panel James Robinson described his up-coming plans for the Justice League of America.

“This is going to be the team for quite some time,” Robinson said. “They’ve grown, and they are the Justice League.” They’ll be taking on the Crime Syndicate, with Supergirl taking on Ultraman, Jesse Quick against Johnny Quick, Batman vs. Owlman. “You’re actually going to see Superman and Hal Jordan being unable to help them,” Robinson said, adding that Superman is going to be confident in their chances of success. After this, an “interplanetary” event.

Newsarama’s Albert Ching, quoting James Robinson

The DC Teams panel covered so many books that there wasn’t much different announced there (possibly even less).

A far more substantive Justice League preview was delivered by  AICN Comics’s pre-SDCC interview with James Robinson which included his philosophy to interaction with editorial fiat.

The JLA is a book that must always allow for the events of the DCU proper that are going on around it. Yes, I did have the rug pulled out from under me, by having this mass exodus of characters happen due to events in other books. I confess I hated losing Mon-El. But in the end I think the book is better for it now, with the team having a better core group and I get to use Supergirl who I’m having a lot of fun with. You can bitch and moan about these kind of things, or you can get on with it and try to work with what you have.

Basically, business as usual on Justice League and Generation Lost.

Peter David writing for Young Justice

Peter David, the writer of the original on-going Young Justice comic book, will be writing several episodes for the new animated series of the same name he announced on his blog.

First, I neglected to mention yesterday that I attended the presentation of the “Young Justice” animated series. The audience reaction seems overwhelmingly positive, and I’m glad to hear it, because (and I am now free to mention it) I’m going to be writing several episodes for the series. I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to reconnect with the characters, even if there are some differences between the guys I wrote and the new incarnation. I would love to tell you all about my first episode, but I’m afraid that it’s…oh, what’s the word…Secret.

The Secret was the name of a young girl with a mysterious background who was freed from a Government owned “orphanage” for young super humans. She actually pre-dates David’s run on the title and first appeared in a Young Justice one-shot written by Todd Dezago.

A new Young Justice comic will be released by DC and will be written the current creative team of the Billy Batson book.

Young Justice voice cast

Following the  release of yesterday’s preview reel for Young Justice, UGO has reported from the Brave and the Bold panel that the main cast has been announced.

  • Robin/Dick GraysonJesse McCartney a singer and song writer with the boy band Dream Street, played “Andy” in Greek, and  Theodore in Alvin and the Chipmunks. The UGO announcement specifically references that this Robin is Dick Grayson.
  • Kid Flash/Wally WestJason Spizak -  is a voice actor and computer programmer. Apparently he worked on some Linux distributions – for any true geek this is way cooler than any of his voice work. The UGO announcement specifically references that this Kid Flash is Wally West, which would logically make the JLA’s Flash Barry Allen.
  • Aqualad - Kari Peyton – Possibly a surprise, she was a former Olympic US High-Jumper and has since turned her hand to some acting and cast direction. As Len points out in the comments, Aqualad is actually going to be voiced by Khary Payton who played Cyborg in the Teen Titans animated series. It had been reported that Tequan Richmond was one of those who auditioned for the role. The UGO announcement contains the spoiler that this boy is Black Manta’s son, that may be a plot line that gets explored in Brightest Day prior to Young Justice’s first airing.
  • Superboy/Connor KentNolan North – Cyclops from Wolverine and the X-Men, played Power Ring in Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths. Potentially the most experienced voice artist in the cast. The UGO announcement pegs this Superboy as Conner.
  • Miss MartianDanica McKellar – Freida Goren from Static Shock and Sapphire Stagg from Justice LeagueMetamorphosis“.
  • ArtemisStephanie Lemelin – She announced her own casting prematurely on her blog and had to rapidly delete the post. She followed up with a proper post once the series announcement has been made.

Other voices announced are for members of the Justice League.

  • Batman - Bruce Greenwood – Interesting casting as he also plays Batman in the upcoming Red Hood direct-to-DVD feature.  He played Christopher Pike in the recent Star Trek film.
  • Green Arrow - Alan Tudyk – Played the Barry Allen Flash in an episode of Brave and the Bold.  Wash from Josh Whedon’s Firefly.
  • Aquaman - Phil LaMarr – the immensely talented Phil LaMarr played Green Lantern John Stewart in Justice League and Justice League Unlimited.
  • Captain Marvel - Rob Lowe – Sam Seaborn from the Westwing. He was also Wayne’s rival for Cassandra’s heart in the original Wayne’s World film.

There is an interesting weight to that Justice League cast that makes them distinct from the Young Justice cast.

And, maybe the most surprisingly, bit of info was that this is all set on Earth-16 in the DC Multiverse proper. No 16 no doubt because it is a reference to the age of the characters.

Young Justice First Footage & Producer Interview

Our first look at Young Justice curtsey of TheWB and producers Greg Weisman and Brandon Vietti. New details include that this is set in a DC Universe that has been running for about 10 years, there is a 14-member JLA operating out of the now classic Hall of Justice, and these are their students. New characters mentioned include Red Arrow (the male Roy Harper Speedy).

The animation looks great and the character models seem to follow Phil Bourassa’s style and the look established for Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths. I’m not saying its set in the Crisis on Two Earths universe, just that it look more like that film that the older Bruce Timm DCAU.

Dan Didio mentioned at the DC Nation panel that there would be a Young Justice in the Johnny DC line which is a bit odd as the cartoon looks like its skewing slightly older than the normal pre-teen target audience of the Johnny DC range.

SDCC 2010 – Brightest Day teaser image

It has begun. I have had rather insane deadlines to work through this week so I haven’t had chance to follow much of the pre-San Diego Comic Con (SDCC) news. Hopefully that should end not that the convention has started. It’ll be nice to sit back and watch the stream of information and news coming from San Diego – it surely can’t be too many years before conventions start streaming panels on the web (for a suitable fee, conventions are commercial ventures after all).

DC seems to have taken an interesting track this year in that they are pre-announcing many of their announcements on the Source Blog. These include J.T. Krul taking over Teen Titans, Paul Cornell’s Knight and Squire mini-series, and Marc Guggenheim taking over the Justice Society. That last one caught my interest as it starts with JSA #44 in October. It’s means that the current writer, Bill Willingham, has already done his final issue last month (JLA #40) as the JLA’s James Robinson is writing JSA #41/42 as part of the “Dark Things” crossover and JSA #43 as a coda featuring Obsidian and Alan Scott.

The biggest pre-SDCC tease has to be the latest in DC’s traditional teaser posters. This one shows Hal Jordan as the While Lantern lounging in the ruins of the White Lantern Battery (does look a bit throne like doesn’t it) while the stars of Brightest Day work around him.

  • Ronnie Raymond and Jason Rusch are trying to unearth the Black Lantern Firestorm, possibly a reference to trying to discover the secrets behind the Firestorm matrix.
  • Mera is running towards Aquaman‘s corpse while the new Aqualad stands by and Black Manta’s red eyes peer out of the shadows.
  • Deadman fashions a tombstone saying “Rise”
  • The Martian Manhunter is trying to start a fire, stoke one up, or put it out – it isn’t entirely clear. The smoke from which is manifesting as the face of the Anti-Monitior.
  • Captain Boomerang‘s blood stained boomerangs are piled next to a Star City sign.
  • Hawk and Dove carry the unconscious body of Jade. Does she die in the “Dark Things”?
  • Hawkman and Hawkgirl are bound to a portal made from bones. Manhawks are streaming out of the portal.
  • Yellow lighting in the background could be a reference to Professor Zoom.
  • There is a shield at Jason Rusch’s feet that I don’t recognise.. Not sure what that is, but there are white lines radiating out from it, possibly a net or circuitry.
  • That appears to be Hal Jordan reclining, bleeding in the shell of the White Lantern. In the background Guy Gardner and Ganthet and building something and there is a green coffin. Green Lantern John Stewart was an architect, I sure hope that isn’t him in the coffin (it wouldn’t do for DC to lose another non-white character).
  • Missing at first glance is Maxwell Lord (then again he’s convinced the world he doesn’t exist so why should he be there) and Osiris (the lightning may be a reference to him and not zoom).
  • The trident/harpoon that lies broken at Aqualad’s feet is Magog’s staff.

Mattel Starro set unboxing video

This video from the official Matty Collector site shows an unboxing of Mattel’s Starro vs. the Justice League boxed set.

I’m not normally interested in merchandise and action figures – ergo their usual absence from this blog – but that Starro set is really rather cool. Not only does the contents look fabulous, but there is also a special narration button that triggers short descriptions of the characters recorded by Batman: the Animated Series‘s Kevin Conroy.

Mattel SDCC Exclusive Starro Figure

There is a long tradition of producing exclusive comics or action figures for sale just at conventions. Mattel have just released details of their exclusive products for San Diego 2010 and there are a couple of Justice League related figures in there. The biggest one is an exclusive Starro figure – complete with Kevin Conroy recording. However, they’ve are also giving away free 6″ figure scale Starro face huggers that can be attached to your other DCU figures (an oddly inspired concept).

What is possibly surprising is that there are no SDCC exclusives for the old Justice League Unlimited line.
