Kevin Maguire’s DC Direct blueprints

A few years back DC Direct produced two series of Justice League International action figures based on designs by Kevin Maguire, the original JLI artist. At the time the blueprints for these were printed in Action Figure Insider (AFI) where they would have languished if they had not been discovered and posted to the internet by Jeff Nocomski of Poytress of Solitude. Those designs have now acquired a second lease of life after they were reposted by the Comics Alliance. I’ve reposted them below and have grouped them into their separate waves.

Series 1 (2008)

The first series comprised Batman, G’Nort, Ice, and Black Canary.

Preview covers for upcoming JL titles

DC have released several upcoming JLA covers including the preview covers from Cliff Chiang and Kevin Maguire for Justice League: Generation Lost #10. Both show pretty major events including Batman’s arrival on the scene and the confirmation that Maxwell Lord is trying to prevent the Kingdom Come future coming true.

Last week DC also released Ethan Van Sciver’s cover to Justice League of America (vol 2.) #50 showing the JLA fighting the Crime Syndicate from the Anti-Matter Earth. Ethan even manages to make Ultraman and Super Woman look more evil and unpleasant than normal.

That particular image caught Bleeding Cool’s attention as the letters from the shattered “Justice League of America” sign around Donna Troy seemed to spell S.T.F.U. However, Ethan posted to the BC message boards that there wasn’t anything deliberate about the positioning.

Another poster asked him about the reference he’d used for Donna Troy and he responded with,

I grabbed the most recent available reference on Donna Troy, by Mark Bagley, I think, from a JLA cover he did. Unless I’m actually drawing the book, I follow the lead of the current interior artist. What he/she says goes!

(You may spot that the cover contains a colouring mistake – the colour of Donna’s lasso is yellow in this preview, but has been established as blue in earlier issues to make it distinct from Diana’s lasso – but, one assume that’s nothing to do with Ethan).

JLA Solicitations for November 2010

DC has released their Brightest Day solicitations (including the JLA) for November 2010. JLA #51 features a great variant cover of Starman and Congorilla by David Mack (the subject may not be as pretty as his Supergirl cover, but it’s great to see all team members getting their cover turn). The other five Leaguers (Jesse, Donna, Batman/Dick, Jade, and Supergirl) it refers to are the direct surrogates of the heroes the Crime Syndicate are based on so that makes sense.

The solicitation for Generation Lost pretty much confirms that either Captain Atom or Magog is going to die (Magog’s title has just been cancelled, you do the math). It would appear to be a fairly definite conclusion to the White Lantern directive for Max, but the series isn’t even half over yet. The second part of the JLA/The 99 crossover is also solicited.

Explosive variant covers for JL titles

DC have posted a set of variant and new covers for their upcoming titles. These include a pair of fantastic Justice League: Generation Lost #6 covers by Kevin Maguire (exploding Captain Atom) and Cliff Chiang (New Frontier style time travel) and a variant cover to Justice League of America #47 by Alex Garner.

From the start of Generation Lost I’d preferred the Kevin Maguire covers – and that is a brilliant Captain Atom pin-up – but, I’m really warming to the strong sense of design that Tony Harris and now Cliff Chiang have brought to the normal covers.
