Justice League DVDs

Warner Brothers have just released Justice League: The Complete Series, one almighty boxed set that contains every episode of the Justice League ever released. There have been a few Justice League DVD releases over the years so I thought I’d list them all to eliminate any confusion.

Separates

The first half of the first seasons of  Justice League and Justice League Unlimited have been released as separates (a single DVD containing 3-4 episodes). There is an assumption among marketers that younger viewers will just watch the same episode time, after time, after time. This repetition can send parents insane, but fans can also find it frustrating that only a couple of episodes from each show ever get released (what’s the point if the kids only “want” one disc). These discs were released under the DC Kids Collection banner.

There was a set called The Justice League Collection. This was a a bundle of first three separate DVDs (Secret Origins, Justice on Trial, and Paradise Lost) in a cardboard box. You can normally find the Season One box set for the same price as this collection.

To confuse things further, Justice League: Injustice For All and Justice League: Brave and the Bold were released under the Kids TV Favourites banner. The boxes say they contain ”two episodes” – I assume these are the first and second parts of the named episodes.

Boxed Sets

Fortunately, Warner Brothers have recognised that there is a distinct market segment of older fans who want to buy complete seasons of shows. As part of the DC Comics Classics Collection there have been two Justice League and two Justice League Unlimited DVD boxed sets. Likewise, each of the Batman and Superman seasons have been released as DVD sets.

Blue Ray

Justice League Season One had been released on Blueray. Season Two hasn’t been released yet, but Amazon have a sign up page for notification of when its going to be released.

The Compete Series

This is the big one. It’s just been released and contains all the episodes and special features from the original four DVD boxed sets. If you’ve never bought a set before this is probably the one you’d want to go for.

New ‘Voices of Krypton’ magazine with exclusing Crisis on Two Earths interviews

Voices of Krypton is a new magazine “devoted to superheroes on film and TV.” The premier issue features a special look at the animated Justice League including a look at all 52-episodes with producers Bruce Timm, James Tucker, and Dwayne McDuffie.

Their website has an exclusive chat with the writer (Dwayne McDuffie) and the cast of the upcoming Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths DVD feature film. They talk to  William Baldwin (Batman), Mark Harmon (Superman), James Woods (Owlman), Gina Torres (Super Woman), and Christopher North (Lex Luthor).

McDuffie commented on the nature of the second Earth.

“There are so many different continuities for all of the characters in the comics over the many years, that we’re sort of used to seeing Batman and Superman in different contexts, which is fun,” says writer Dwayne McDuffie, “but a lot of it, in this particular case, is seeing what the world would be like if they weren’t good people. They have enormous power and there are almost no checks on their power. We dealt with this on the Justice League TV series, where they went to a parallel world where the Justice League met parallel versions of themselves [the Justice Lords] who had decided that the way to get rid of crime was to control everything and had maybe gone too far in that direction. In this case, they’re meeting not direct parallels of themselves, but people who sort of take those same positions. You’ve got Owlman instead of Batman, Ultraman instead of Superman, and Super Woman instead of Wonder Woman. They’re completely different people who have chosen to use their power for personal gain.”

Voices of Krypton is available now and costs $12 with US shipping and $20 with international shipping.

Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths

James Harvey has spotted something interesting about the DVD covers for Superman/Batman: Public Enemies over at the World’s Finest Online.

According to the back cover art for the upcoming Blu-ray and Two-Disc Special Edition DVD release of Superman/Batman: Public Enemies, hitting shelves next month, the title of the next direct-to-video animated feature from the popular “DC Universe Animated Original Movie” line is Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths. Dwayne McDuffie (Justice League Unlimited) is listed as the writer for this upcoming feature. Official details on Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths are not expected until later this year.

This sounds like another straight adaptation of a comics storyline – namely the story from JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #21 (“Crisis on Earth One”, August 1963) and #22 (“Crisis on Earth-Two!”, September 1963) which featured the first meeting of the Justice League from Earth-One and the Justice Society from Earth-Two.

A loose version of this story has appeared before as”Legends” from the first season of the Justice League cartoon, but it used surrogates for the JSA and included its own twist. Whether this adaptation will use the cartoon continuity or just go for a self contained world isn’t known.  And may I say, it’s nice to see Dwayne McDuffie back writing the Justice League again.
