Dubbilex (Earth-16)

Background

Project Cadmus, or the DNA Project, was first introduced into Superman’s sidekick’s comic (Jimmy Olsen) by Jack Kirby as a federally funded wonderland that created all sorts of stage alien like genetic mutants. In the comics Dubbilex is a “DNAlien” created by the Project. He appears alien, but was always one of the more human characters with a genuine concern for the creatures that Cadmus created – he was after all one of them.

In YJ continuity Dubbilex is a Gene-Goblin According to producer Greg Weisman:

For the record, there are G-Gnomes (the tiny psychic guys), G-Trolls (the huge strong brutes), G-Elves (the clawed warriors), G-Dwarves (the tentacled worker drones), G-Sprites (the electricity generating creatures) and one G-Goblin (Dubbilex) with telekinetic powers (and secret psychic powers).

Dubbilex was voiced by Phil LaMarr.

Biography

Dubbilex is a gene-goblin (a geneomorph) – genetically engineered life form created by Project Cadmus. He served as an assistant of sorts to it’s chief scientist Mark Desmond, but became increasingly worried about Desmond’s treatment of his geneomorph creations and his plans for “the Weapon” (a teenage clone of Superboy created for the Light). Dubbilex started a fire in Cadmus’s above ground offices in the hope of attracting the attention of the Justice League, but he actually attracted the attention of the League’s teen sidekicks who were seeking to prove themselves worthy to their mentors.

Dubbilex secretly guided Aqualad, Kid Flash, and Robin to Superboy and then helped direct their escape. He finally revealed himself when Desmond’s geneomorphs had the boys surrounded. He gave Superboy the choice of freedom or continued subservience to the Project. Superboy chose freedom and helped defeat the Blockbuster brute (a transformed Desmond). Following Desmond’s removal Guardian was promoted to led the Project and convinced Dubbilex to stay on by promising that his tenure would see a “kinder, gentler Cadmus”.
