The World
This universe is the mainstream DC Universe as shown in comics published after September 2011. The shape of the new DCU is still relatively uncharted, but there are principal differences. The old Earth-2/Golden Age characters are absent – sent back to their own parallel earth – and are replaced by characters from DC’s Wildstorm and Vertigo imprints. The ages of the Justice Leaguers have been dialed back and the entire super-human timeline has been reset so that it started only give years ago. Its a slightly more edgy DCU and lacks the more whimsical elements of the old. Most characters were completely rebooted with only the must successful juggernauts (Batman and Green Lantern) were left unscathed.
The 2011 DCU relaunch is/was a commercial and creative gamble. Commercially it was DC’s admittance that something had to give, that their business model could not afford for their fan base to dwindle much more that it had also ready done so. Their solution was to radically overhaul their distribution model by going line-wide on simultaneous digital and print releases and by resetting all their titles back to issue one. A massive national advertising campaign accompanied the launch and DC has been aggressive about addressing/cancelling titles that aren’t preforming.
