Site Updates (page 7)

Intermission

WE’RE BACK… we’ve lost most of the previous year’s posts , but I’m going to press on regardless. (And yes I am now backing up stuff regularly). See the note at the top of the front page for more details.

DC Live Action List

Watched Superman II for the first time in years the other day and I remembered that Terance Stamp (Zod) had also played the voice of Jor-El on the Smallville TV show. This got me thinking, just who had which what DC characters. I’d been meaning to compile a list of such appearances for a while to complement the DC Live Action wallpaper produced by Jerry. Am IMDB rampage and a Usenet airing later and the result is the DC Live Action Stars – Actor and Voice Artist List v0.9. This is only a temporary version – I’ll be adding full markup and cross referencing when the site update goes live (about 33% done on that now).

Hush… there is new wallpaper in the Desktop section.

It looks like these wallpaper additions are becoming a semi-monthly affair. This time around we have 43 new images supplied by Jerry, Philip and myself. Quite a broad range this time, from Jerry we have a nice selection of individual Titan images, from Phil we have some nice Jim Lee Hush montages and I’ve added a few live-shots and a couple of oddities. Check it out in our JLA Desktop section

Some of my favourites:

Templates and musings.

Its strange how things can eat into you time. I just moved into apartments and took the chance to sign up for digital cable. I keep forgetting how bad US TV really is. The signal to noise last night was practically non-existent!. An old episodes of DS9, a late night Buffy repeat and some random stuff I’ve never heard of from Sci-Fi. (Can somebody please explain to me why the heck Insight put the Sci-Fi channel in the channel pack that is obstentially for sport channels?) Thank Kirby for Cartoon Network – a new episode of Teen Titans and a midnight double bill of Batman and Superman. The second thing eating into my time is Sony’s Playstation – those FFX Ultimate Weapons will be mine! However these nefarious inventions will not stop me from moving forward with this site. I’ve just finished putting together a mock-up for a redesign which should go live in about a month’s time. Meanwhile we’ve got an update to the JLA Desktop and profiles of Jason Woodrow and Lois Lane to finish.

Mnemon

Mnemon as rendered by me.Added a profile on Mnemon to the Justice Files section. Mnemon was the sentient recording device created by Rick Veitch for his fill-on on JLA #77. Mnemon is a metallic egg sized device.

I’ve been playing around with the POVRAY ray tracer so decided to have a try and rendering the Mnemon shell. Its a tougher shape than it looks – it also doesn’t help that the art team don’t draw it the same in any two panels. I’ve made a decent first attempt, but I may go back and add detailing if I get the time.

Though I dream in vain,
my heart it will remain.
My stardust melody,
The memory of love’s refrain

Server oddities?

I’ve been noticing intermittent server glitches recently. I’ve altered our hosts highly trained support staff to the problem so we’ll see what happens. If you get problems with a page displaying or get PHP errors then his reload a couple of times and it should work.

MORE Wallpaper!

Oh the superhumanity of it!! MORE WALLPAPERS!!. We’ve got a real mix of new desktop images for you this time round at the Unofficial JLA Desktop. In excitement over the new Superman/Batman series Jerry has supplied us with a whole slew of the World’s Finest desktops. New contributor Phillip has supplied us with, amougst other images, a rather cool JLA/Avengers crowd scene. And I’ve added a couple of my own favourites including a couple of Justice Guild pics and a few classic movie posters.

Lex Luthor

Presenting a profile of the President of the United States of America and arch-enemy of the Man of Steel: Lex Luthor. Luthor grew up in the Hobs Bay slums of Metropolis and pulled himself out of poverty using every legal and illegal means within his reach. The billionaire has fought a chess like game with Superman and with the Justice League as leader of the Injustice Gang. He was instrumental in leading Earth’s forces to victory against Imperiex.

This is an update and a recoding of the Lex Luthor profile from the V3 site. It has been updated through to the end of the “Never Ending Battle” storyline to bring it into step with the Superman profile. It includes a new discussion on his abilities and an expanded secret origins section.

Dr Light

Presenting the Dick Dastardly of the super-villain set: Doctor Arthur Light. He first appeared in issue 12 of the Silver Age JLA and with each new appearance fought weaker and weaker foes with the vain hope of finally beating one of them. A short imprisonment within the Green Lantern battery has supercharged the Doc and he’s back as a nemesis for Kyle Rayner and as a member of the Injustice Gang. The original text for this profile was written by Jerry Whitworth.

Bugs

You may notice one or two bugs around the place over the next few days. The team who hosts this site have had to make one or two changes to their server setup which means some of the php scripts that run this page are broken. I should have them up and running fairly quickly. Sorry for any inconvenience.

Update: I seem to have caught most of the bugs. The only two remaining are the gzhandler which you may notice at the bottom of some pages (which may be a server config issue) and a slew of errors generated by the previews section. I’ve got a replacement working offline for this section so I’ve just disabled it for the moment. If anybody has any problem with the site please let me know at jla@captain.custard.org.
