Superman movies in the Public Domain
The 1940s Columbia movie serial that is. It’s available to view over at the Internet Archives. I knew that the 1940s Superman cartoons were Public Domain, but I was not aware that this motion picture serial was also in the public domain. The Archive describes it as:
The Superman serial was a 1948 15-part black-and-white movie [...]
Earth-One Supergirl variant figure – the dead one
This could be one of the stranger DC action figures that I’ve seen…
These are pictures of the DC Universe: Infinite Heroes – The Heart of Crisis variant of the Earth-One Supergirl. More specifically they’re of the dead Earth-One Supergirl from the cover of CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS #7.
Notice that even the blister pack has Superman [...]
50th Anniversary of the death of George Reeves
An article on the Wired website points out that George Reeves, the original actor to play Superman, died fifty years ago today on June 16th, 1959.
Although alternative theories persist over Reeves’ suicide, ably explained in the 2006 film Hollywoodland, the passage of time has told the tale of an ultimately frustrated artist locked in a [...]
Life-size Lois Lane statue heading for Metropolis
CNN are reporting that Metropolis, IL is adding a Lois Lane statue to join their iconic Superman statue.
The villain is the economy. Despite being about $70,000 shy of the funding needed to cast a figure in the image of the fictional “Daily Planet” reporter, this town of 6,000 residents says it’s going forward with a [...]
Help preserve the Siegel House
There is something really quite special about the people who create the icons of our society. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes is a prime example where the life of the author is as interesting as his creation. And we have an example of this within our own hobby. Jerry Siegel was one of those [...]
Nobody wins with Siegel Vs DC
“You’re Superman. And Superman belongs to the world.” — Lana Lang, Man of Steel #6
Jerry Siegel’s hier have just won one stage in their fight to regain the copyright to Superman from Warner Brothers/DC Comics. I’m ambivalent about the custody battle being fought out over the rights to Superman and Superboy. Maybe its because Superman [...]
People talking about Superman
Kurt Busiek on the Superman plots he’s leaving behind:
“But one of the great things about working in the DC Universe is that leaving a series doesn’t mean you have to drop all the ideas. Some of what I had planned for Superman will find its way into the mystery project, just as some of [...]
BBC: “NZ couple to name child Superman”
Politicians are on holiday, so it’s the silly season for news stories:
A couple in New Zealand is planning to call their newborn son Superman after officials rejected their original choice of 4Real.
It appears that New Zealand has rules against giving children stupid names. The couple in question are called Wheaton, so it’s not as if [...]
Thoughts on Superman’s Continity
Superman’s continuity is, and has always been, a fluid affair. Since his first appearance a succession of writers and editors have consistently expanded and enriched Superman’s backstory and mythology to the extent that many of his adventures have been reinterpreted and reinvented multiple times. It starts with Jerry Siegel, Superman’s co-creator and his first writer. [...]
Was Man of Steel necessary?
In his “Meanwhile…” editorial* in the back of Man of Steel #1 Dick Giordano comments that he shared with John Byrne “a common goal: to return Superman to his rightful place in the universe.” Which made me think about what Superman’s place was in the universe was in 1986. We can discuss issues about coolness, [...]
