Jim Lee has designed the above image to adorn the Free Comic Book Day official t-shirt. The shirt itself will be solicited in January’s Previews and profits from it will go to help support the FCBD’s marketing and promotional efforts.
And the JLA Comic Con freebies continue to appear. Hot on the heels of WB’s bags comes the cover to the actual SDCC souvenir programme featuring a brand-new image of the new Justice League by Jim Lee.
The design will also be available at the Con as a Graphitti Designs t-shirt.
Those of you heading to San Diego for Comic Con will be able to pick up one on ten swanky bag designs released by the WB. Each bag shows a promotion image and one of them features the Justice League. It’s the same promotional image that was on the Toon Tumblers SDCC material – one expect we’ll be seeing a lot more of it.
More than 130,000 of the signature, oversized (24”x28”) bags — dubbed the Con’s “ubiquitous accessory” by Entertainment Weekly — have been produced, and will be available to fans attending Comic-Con upon checking in throughout the five days of the convention, including Preview Night.
For the first time, the 2011 edition of the bag converts into a backpack, making it as cool as ever — and even more functional! (And, yes, the protective poster tube remains intact.)
Is this our first look at the full post-Flashpoint Justice League? Toon Tumblers are a merchandising company who produced DC and Marvel Comics branded glasses and pitchers. The above artwork was posted to their Facebook page as an SDCC exclusive. They’ll be producing a line of tumblers with a wrap around of the JL for SDCC.
The obvious guess would be that the figures to either side are other members of the JL. These include Deadman, Atom, an unknown woman, and Firestorm on the left and Green Arrow, Hawkman, a blond-haired woman, and Mera on the right. The blond could be Black Canary, but she looks like she’s not in a costume (she’s wearing a coat and scarf).
Jim Lee commented (somewhere I’ll have to dig it out and repost) that they were taking a slightly more corporate look on the Justice League costumes. You can see this with the collars on Aquaman, GL, Superman, and Batman, but also in the shape of the belts/waist detail on GL, Aquaman, WW, Superman, and the Flash. It’s not big stuff, but a lot of subtle stuff. The Batman look reminds me of that from Arkham Asylum and works well – he’s a guy who needs that type of protection – but I’m less sold on Superman’s segment look.
Updated to add that: female character on the left is identified online as Element Woman (DC Women Kick Ass) and the right-hand blond woman is possibly a character called Miranda Shrieve (Blog@Newsarama), both are Flashpoint characters.
Things have been pretty quiet on the Young Justice cartoon front for a little while now, but there are a couple of releases and developments I haven’t blogged about yet – a brief appearance of a new episode, a DVD, and those action figures.
The entire first wave should be out at the same time. Review units have been sent out to the big action figure sites. Amazon lists July 1st as the ship data, Toywiz lists June 2011. AFI had an update on the packing for the single figures and they list summer as the ship date – either way they should be appearing in stores soon. (That’s if you believe the notoriously unreliable Toy Company schedules. Kudos to anybody who first spots these in the wild).
There is also a special Superboy variant which will be available at this year’s San Diego Comic Con:
This volume contains the first four episodes – "Independence Day", "Fireworks", "Welcome to Happy Harbor", and "Drop-Zone". This has drawn a few negative pre-release comments on places like Amazon as it isn’t a season boxed set. But, to be fair to WB the season isn’t over yet and this is standard practise in marketing kids DVDs.
New Episodes (MIA)
This posting was actually prompted by a question from a reader. Rick asked:
Is Young Justice coming back with a new story line?
The short answer is yes, but we don’t known when. Back in May Greg Weisman (YJ co-producer) gave a production update on the status of the of the show. It listed episodes 10 & 11 as ready to air and episodes 12 & 13 as in post-production (the last episode broadcast was episode 9). However, the current status of the TV schedule is that both DC’s Young Justice and Batman: The Brave and the Bold are in repeats through to at least July 1st.
Cartoon Network had earlier said that they were going to show the new material, but then changed their minds. (If I had to speculate on why Cartoon Network were holding back new material I’d guess that it’s probably to build up a run of material which they could then show as a block without having to fall back to repeats.)
For some reason episode 10 “Targets” was briefly available on Cartoon Network’s website, although I can’t see it on there at the moment or on Amazon’s download service.
A few years back DC Direct produced two series of Justice League International action figures based on designs by Kevin Maguire, the original JLI artist. At the time the blueprints for these were printed in Action Figure Insider (AFI) where they would have languished if they had not been discovered and posted to the internet by Jeff Nocomski of Poytress of Solitude. Those designs have now acquired a second lease of life after they were reposted by the Comics Alliance. I’ve reposted them below and have grouped them into their separate waves.
Series 1 (2008)
The first series comprised Batman, G’Nort, Ice, and Black Canary.
After NY Toy Fair proper catalogue images of the Young Justice Wave 1 figures have started appearing on retailer websites. What I haven’t seen are catalogue images of the initial 4.25″ separates – these were believed to include Robin and Aqualad from the twin-packs plus Icicle Jr and Speedy.
News and photographs are filtering out of last weekend’s New York Toy Fair. The first announcement was the sad news that the 10-year old Justice League Unlimited line was being retired in favour of the new Young Justice line. Retailers are getting excited about Young Justice and unfortunately the JLU line just isn’t doing enough numbers for Mattel any more. the Mattel’s own comments can be found on their Matte Collector website.
As bummed as we are that JLU is ending, we’re really excited about the premiere of the Young Justice™ line. You told us you liked the animated TV series and we know you’re gonna love the new figures based on the series! We premiered 4 new 4.25” figures, bringing the total shown to 8 out of the 12 you’ll need to build the awesome Collect & Connect™ diorama, The Hall of Justice™. We also revealed 4 more two-packs that include A-list characters and 3 of the all-new 6” figures sculpted by the Four Horseman. These figures come with incredible display stands and tons of accessories for unlimited display options.
The list of figures revealed at the New York Toy Fair from the Matte Collector site is shown below. Included in the prototypes are several figures that could be considered spoilers for future episodes.

DCU Young Justice 6″ Figure Assortment

Artemis™
Robin™
The inclusion of Ra’s Al Ghul and Vandal Savage would suggest that they are part of the mysterious Light. Not included in that list, but already announced are 4.25″ figures of Speedy and Icicle Jr . As previously announced there will be 12 4.25″ separates in the first year which will each containing a fragment of the Hall of Justice. So we now know 8 of the 12. The first wave will be Robin, Speedy, Aqualad, and Icicle Jr. Toy Fair has just announced Black Canary, Captain Atom, Superboy, and Vandal Savage which could make a second wave.
Photograph galleries of the Mattel display can be found at sites including Action Figure Pictures and Toy New International. During AFi’s long (30 min) interview about JLU with Mattel’s Scott Neitlich it was mentioned that the very first Young Justice toy will be a San Diego Comic-Con exclusive (July) with the rest of the line launching in the fall – plenty of time for Christmas, but still quite a while off.
Unfortunately the first wave of Young Justice action figures weren’t released in time for this year’s Christmas. However, details of the 2011 line have been released.
These are being produced by Mattel who has the license to do all non-DC Direct DC Comics action figures. This means that they have the opportunity to sync the figure scale with that of the earlier, and still produced, Justice League Unlimited (now Justice League Universe) toyline at 4.25″and the DC Universe line at 6″.
There will be 12-figures in the first-year 4.25″ line. Each figure in the 4.25″ figures will include a piece of the Hall of Justice. This is part of something Mattel call “Collect-and-Connect” and creates a unified diorama to display your collection.
The 6″ line will be hyper-articulated and will be sculpted by the Four Hoursmen to closely match the animation style of the cartoon show.
The first wave will consist of Robin and Kid Flash plus Speedy and Icicle Jnr (characters from the opening movie). There will also be four twin-packs showing the sidekicks with their mentors (Batman and Robin, Aquaman and Aqualad, Flash and Kid Flash plus another to-be-announced pair). The 6″ line will include Robin, Aqualad, and Artemis.
I’m not normally interested in merchandise and action figures – ergo their usual absence from this blog – but that Starro set is really rather cool. Not only does the contents look fabulous, but there is also a special narration button that triggers short descriptions of the characters recorded by Batman: the Animated Series‘s Kevin Conroy.
From the horse's mouth: RT @DCComics We can confirm that Justice League #5 from @jimlee and @geoffjohns is indeed hitting shelves next week. 3 weeks ago
The new logo is for DC Entertainment which makes me wonder if they are differentiating the parent from DC Comics proper. 3 weeks ago
