I don't think that's a criticism that can be uniquely nailed on DC's door. Why is it always American's who save the the day in Hollywood movies? It's because these book and films are aimed produced and marketed for the American market by Americans. The same thing happens in British Sci-Fi produced for a British market (e.g. Doctor Who) and I'm sure it happens in most other countries literature.

Even in this story, we've seen the German Rocket Elite, Naiad, and the Samurai show up - albeit as cannon fodder -- but they are there. I would argue that we've got the right writer on JLA if you want non-US heroes to show up. The are mainly obscure characters and that's James Robinson's strength.

That would make sense, if it were more clearly spelled out and if there were more international heroes on the team. Why do the American heroes have to defend the world all the time? Or at least have the heroes interact with foreign colleagues whenever they leave the States. (We know half of them can speak a 2nd major language....)

brainypirate I think this is just one of those many, many contrivances that we learn to over look in superhero comics. As Mark Waid once pointed out Superman's entire secret identity relies on a woman not being able to recognise the man she loves after he's put a pair of glasses on.

Often the JLA is portrayed as the equivalent to China's Great Ten or the Russian Rocket Reds - i.e. the American national superhero team. However, they've always worked best as an international group that sits above the rest (not always obvious when they're not at full strength). It's my opinion the JSA best fits the American national team role.

The JLA-across-the-world part of the story bothers me, because surely there have to be other heroes already in those places who can handle the problem--or at least team up with the Americans to help. How is it possible that all these heroes go crazy and ONLY the JLA shows up to stop them?

That's also a problem I have with the existence of both the JLA and the JSA at the same time -- why wouldn't there be a lot more interaction? When the JSA have a big threat, why aren't any of the Leaguers called in to help? It would make sense if there was a clearer geographical division between the two teams. (For instance, I assume that the Teen Titans and the Outsiders aren't going to be jetting across country everytime a supervillain attacks the JLA--but only because I assume they have a restricted range.) I know comics aren't realistic, but when you have two supergroups sharing space like this, it gets confusing as to why they help each other out more....

Does that strike anyone else as odd?

I'll be including the two JSA issues that are part of the cross over. It's going to be a busy time over the next couple of months what with this crossover and Generation Lost - we've effectively got a weekly JLA schedule.
