Road to Twilight

“”

Season: , Episode: . Originally aired:

There is going to be a little detour before I get to the animated Justice League‘s second season. As I’ve been reviewing/commenting on the episodes I’ve been incorporating certain  Superman and Batman episodes to show the first appearances of reoccurring characters (e.g. the Aquaman and Flash in “A Fish Story” and “Speed Demons”). “Twilight” is the first story of Justice League‘s second season and it is a massive sequel to the Superman animated series. It features Darkseid drafting Superman and the Justice League to help in the defence of Apokolips after its attacked by Brainiac.

Brainiac first appears in the Superman origin story “The Last Son of Krypton” as Krypton’s Internet. He reappears in the first season episode “Stolen Memories” and then in the second season episode “Ghost In The Machine”. That season two appearance is important as it sets-up a lot of the back story that runs through the first two seasons of Justice League Unlimited. Brainiac makes one last appearance in “Knight Time” (the Robin/Superman crossover). Darkseid’s Intergang operations first appear in the first season “Tools of The Trade” and his son Kalibak makes an appearance in the second season “Father’s Day” episode. However, it’s not until the third season with the “Apokolips… Now!”, “Little Girl Lost” and “Legacy” two-parters that he really makes his presence felt. That’s about a dozen episodes that I’m going to try to get through before I start on “Twilight”.

  1. I’ve enjoyed your detailed articles on Justice League (along with other DCAU productions). Do you intend to review other episodes of Batman, Superman, Batman Beyond, and Static Shock (outside the ones featuring characters in Justice League/Justice League Unlimited, of course)?

    • I think the answer to that has to be yes I intend to do the other episodes, but finding the time is an entirely different matter. I’ll probably end up doing a good third of the Superman stuff just for the Justice League episodes. Batman and Beyond I’m not so sure about. I’d like to include the Static Shock stuff, but it strangely isn’t out on DVD so I may not be able to cover that in quite the same way.

A site that I would recommend for retro-DCAU coverage is Justice League: Revisited. They started about the same time that I started doing the cartoon commentaries, but being more focused has allowed them to storm ahead.
