If you read any of the geek related entertainment blogs or news-sites then it won’t have escaped your attention that the live action Justice League movie is back on track. In typical omniscient style Variety reports that:
Warners tried to get “Justice League” into production earlier, but put it on indefinite hold in January, allowing the cast options to expire. At the time, the studio said it didn’t want to move ahead until the scribes had another shot at the script.
Scribes Kieran and Michele Mulroney are busy polishing up the script, which is expected back at the studio in several weeks, and the cast has been advised to keep training for their superhero roles. Director George Miller is in pre-production in Australia.
We knew that the actors were keeping busy and and that the backroom staff were expecting production to restart. However, there was a rumour that the movie had been pushed back to a 2010 start date. So we could see the Variety statement as a statement that everything is back on course.
Now the reason that I’m kicking myself is related to a separate Justice League movie news/rumour that appeared in the last few weeks. Back when news of the League movie first broke one of the issues that came up was that of tax breaks for films made in Australia. It was Superman Returns‘s Oz tax break that is widely credited with saving the film financially. Well, the Australian government is looking to cap the amount that productions can claim back. That has understandably ruffled a few feathers and is being fought by Australian based directors, including George Miller. The Sydney Morning Herald quoted him as saying:
“One of the reasons for doing Justice League in this country is the opportunity to bring back all the people we lost on Happy Feet who went overseas,” Miller said. “We spent four years developing this talent and the cream of them left because they didn’t have another film to go on to …
“The idea is to say come back, start off on Justice League then move onto Happy Feet 2.”
Miller described the movie’s status as “precarious” and said Warner Bros was pushing for it to be shot overseas, with Canada the most likely option.
Before this comment surfaced I received an e-mail tip-off that the movie was on its way to Vancouver, Canada. Unfortunately the tipster didn’t leave his e-mail address so I couldn’t get more details and was over hesitant in blogging about it. I took one look at that Sydney article and then slapped my forehead. My apologises to the tipster.
Something else buried in that SMH article is a possible name change for the film. It had been referred to as just Justice League, but the Herald refers to it as Justice League Mortal. If that sticks or is even the real title remains to be seen.
