By now most of you will now have seen the cover to JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #2. It shows Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman plus seven semi-concealed Leaguers and looks something like this:
There has been a bit of discussion around the internet about who those figures are. The easiest one is the Red Tornado (behind Batman) as he’s mentioned in the blurb that goes with the picture. Next is the Green Lantern behind Superman. The ring is on the right hand so it isn’t Alan and Kyle doesn’t need a ring. The hair is short, but slightly tasselled so I think it’s fairly safe to say that he’s Hal Jordan. The green longbow suggests one of the Green Arrows. Chuck Dixon’s going to be going something with Conner and I think Arsenal is still with the Outsiders so it’s a fair bet that it’s Oliver Queen. Also rather obvious is the figure with large wings at the back. The top of Hawkgirl’s mask is very flat whereas Hawkman’s has more prominent “ears”, so based on the shape of the mask I think that this is Hawkman.
The leaves three completely mysterious figures. The woman at the back is wearing flaired gloves and you can just see triangles on her shoulders where a cape attaches. I think that this is Power Girl. The flying guy dead centre is a cipher as there is almost no detail to his profile. He’s flying to that rules out any of the Flashes or even Cyborg (the latest issue of Wizard gives good odd on him). I think it’s Captain Atom based on a comment Meltzer made in an older issue of Wizard. He commented that “Don’t you want a military man around if you’re going to have a war?” Looks like he has plans for the good Captain.
The final female figure is the hardest. She has a long ponytail and may also be wearing gloves. If I didn’t know better I think that it was Artemis, but I don’t think it is. My gut instinct says that its Zatanna wearing a varient of her Dick Dillin costume.
Meltzer’s Identity Crisis really focused on the Satellite Era so I really wouldn’t be surprised if he basis his JLA on that era. Certainly Ollie, Carter, Hal and Zee are obvious, but I’d be really surprised if we don’t see Dinah or at least find out why she wasn’t picked. 52 is using Ralph Dibny and I can’t see DC wanting to spoil any possible ending of that by having him appear OYL.
So my bet on the new JLA roster is: Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Hawkman, Red Tornado, Zatanna, Power Girl, Green Arrow (Ollie), Green Lantern (Hal) and Captain Atom.
