Comic Book Podcasts

There seems to be something of a boom in interest in podcasts nowadays. If you unfamiliar with podcasts they’re just mp3s – digital sound files – that can be downloaded and listened to using you computer or ipod. In effect they’re just radio shows which you can listen to when and where you want to, but the beauty of the system is that anybody with a microphone and computer can create their own show.

There have been a couple of great shows I’ve recently enjoyed:

  • Word Balloon [RSS] is one of the most consistantly excellent podcasts. They recently talked to Allan Heinberg about writing Wonder Woman and how he made the switch from TV to comics. He also gives some interesting background to his and Geoff Johns JLA arc.
  • DC even had their own podcast channel [RSS] which features audio from some of their big convention panels. I found the most interesting to be the Brad Meltzer spotlight where he talks about the genesis of Identify Crisis.

Other great regular comics related podcasts include:

  • Fanboy Radio [RSS] – podcast of the long running comicbook radio talk show hosted by Scott Hinze, Oliver Tull and co. Guest have included some of the greatest names in the industry.
  • The Golden Age of Comics [RSS] – twice monthly podcast by Bill Jourdain. Each episode discusses one of the stars of the Golden Age and includes news on reprints.
  • Comic Geek Speak – Twice weekly meeting with the Speakers of Geek (Bryan, Peter, Jamie, and co). All purpose comicbook podcast focusing on current comics and reviews.

First impressions 05/04/06

A massive and expensive week last week. OYL continues and Infinite Crisis enters the home straight. Some stuff impressed me more than I thought it would, others disappointed, and I think I’ll be changing my pull list. If anything is to be learned it read Infinite Crisis #6 before anything else (particularly before Teen Titans, Detective Comics, and the OMAC Special). Spoilers and reviews follow:

Compare and contrast

Last year I worked 6-months in the US and 6-months in the UK and I overpaid tax in each region–never trust your employeers pay roll department. To reclaim the over paid tax in the US entailed one of those massive US forms – most Americans will know the type they’ve got the file every year – the one that tells you it take 20 hours to complete! Well, I just phoned the local UK tax office to sort out a refund at this end and it was as simple as -”send in your P60 (the equivalent of a W-2) with a cover letter and we’ll get it sorted”! Fantastic!

Okay, so this has nothing to do with comic books, but it did make me feel proud of the British tax system and there isn’t many times I get to say that. :)
