Bravo’s top 20 super-heroes

Did anybody else just watch Bravo Channel’s Ultimate Super-Heroes? I found it a very stange list. One of those lists compiled by people other than hardcore comic books fans, which means that it’s not just the Ultimate Comic-book Super-powered Costumed-heroes that most of us would draw up. It could more appropriately to called the Ultimate Adventure Heroes. The list they drew up was:

20. Men in Black19. Blade18. Conan The Barbarian17. Austin Powers16. The Tick15. Dare Devil14. The Mask13. Flash Gordon12. Hellboy11. Spawn10. The Hulk09. The Fantastic Four08. The Incredibles07. X-Men06. Luke Skywalker05. Indiana Jones04. James Bond03. Batman02. Superman01. Spider-Man

You can always pull these list a-part asking:what about Wonder Woman, what about Captain Marvel (the really one), or even on this list what about Neo or what about Captain Kirk? But there are somethings on this list that begger belief! I mean, come on, the Incredibles ranking higher than the Fantastic Four?!?

I’ve highlighted in bold the characters I think are true super-heroes. The Tick and the Incredibles are fun, but their not serious. Spawn, Hellboy, Blade, and the Mask are also interesting characters, but their not true super-heroes. They’d never get past the Legion membership committee. And don’t get me started on the looser in the top slot. Time to break out the arachnid-repellant batspray!

Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith

Almost everybody else in the blogsphere has commented on this so I suppose I’d better. Personally I quite liked the film – it had all the classic Star Wars strengths (cool characters, great SFX, amazing setting) and weaknesses (wasting the actor’s potential, duff dialogue, missing subplots).

The thing that was really jarred for me, above anything else, was the shear blockheadedness of Anakin Skywalker. Okay, he’s meant to be emotional insecure given his late entrance into the Jedi Academy (Yoda was right; the boy was too old), but he comes across as some sort of unsophisticated bumpkin who is out of his depth amidst the political mashcinations and grey areas of high political office. It’s something that’s meant to be part of the plot (at one point Obi-wan apologises to Anakin for never teaching him to think), but you never really want to believe it.

It wasn’t until later that I realised when the prophecy from the first two films meant. Anakin does bring balance to the force! At the end of Revenge of the Sith (and it’s no spoiler as it’s the setup for A New Hope) there are balanced number of Sith (Darth Sidious and Darth Vader) and Jedi (Yoda and Obe-wan Kenobi). Another thing I also realised is that the time between the two sets of films will now be properly open for exploration by the Expanded Universe.
