Metallo

Thanks to Jerry we have a new profile of Metallo – Superman’s Tin Man foe. Check it out.

Gerard Jones on NPR’s Talk of the Nation

In case you haven’t noticed form JLA and JLE writer Gerard Jones has a new book out called “Men of Tomorrow” about the history of the early comicbook writers/publishers and it’s a bit a departure from the normal ALTER EGO style interview (as he says “biographic, not bibliographic”). He’s recently given an interview to NPR’s Birth of a Nation call-in show, callers included Chris Claremont and Devin Grayson. Check it out the streaming feed on the NPR website. I’m currently reading the book and I’ll post up a review when I’ve finished.

First thoughts: JLA #107 and DC for this week

Just my random thoughts and quick notes on this weeks DC haul:

JLA #107 “Syndicate Rules Part 1″Kurt Busiek, Ron Garney and Dan Green

The first issue of the new era and Busiek hits the ground running. On the surface this is a relatively simple Martian Manhunter and Flash story about the monthly maintenance of the Watchtower, but it serves to set out the prospectus for Busiek’s run. This is high concept JLA, with sentient internets, world level politics, and the hicks from the next door universe. There is a wonderful – almost Warren Ellis-eque – delight in the technobabble and comicbook science. It’s also nice to see Aquaman back on the team and I hope Green Arrow’s cameo is a precursor to a longer stay. The characterisation is almost spot on for the Flash, but the Martian Manhunter has to carry a lot of exposition.Continue reading

PVP Online

I am, like any good comic geek, a massive fan of Scott Kurtz’s PVP. (For the uninitiated: it’s to gaming and comicbook geeks what Dilbert is to cubical workers). There is a great PVP/JLA painting showcased on the PVPOnline.com website, check under the October News archive and scroll down to the 15th of October item. While your there scroll down to the October 11th for an amazing tribute to Christopher Reeve.

Things to make a comic fan scream…

Spotted on an E-Bay auction by Magnus from rac.dcu:

Here is a huge collection of vintage comic books. My son does not know I am selling them but [they] have been in the closet long enough. I do not know much about them but the years I see are 1950-1980s. One or two 1990.

So if your from Pompano Beach, Florida or your mother lives there you’d better check where your collection is. I’ve still got the bulk of my collection at my parents’ place, but it’d be cheaper to replace the entire collection than it would to ship that many 80s and 90s comics across the Atlantic.

Half an update

Why half an update? Because I’m about to do some surgery on my PC and the safest place for the stuff I’ve been working on is uploaded to this server. :) So we’ve got:

  • DC Live Action List – Added The Batman cartoon series, a couple of fan films, and a number (but not yet all) of the corrections people have sent in (Smallville and Teen Titans updates to follow).
  • Justice League Unlimited: The Return – Screenshots, character details and initial analyis (synopsis and review to follow)
  • JSA #66 – character details (synopsis and review to follow)
  • JLA Gallery – a fan commission by an unknown artist from a recent issue of ALTER EGO

Where to find Justice League Halloween Costumes?

There are still a couple of weeks until Halloween, but it’s about this time that I normally get e-mails from parents asking where they can find costumes for their kids. This year I thought I’d preempt the questions by putting together a short guide to the costumes of the animated Justice League. Important points first: guys please be safe — always double check your costumes with your parents and never ever go trick-or-treating without a responsible adult. Tips and ideas for a safe Halloween can be found on websites like the Halloween Safety Guide.
