Stuff that I missed…

A lot has happened in the weeks that this site was down. The largest of them was, of course, the San Diego Comic Con (SDCC) International and all the news stories that it generates.

The biggest SDCC news is that Kurk Busiek (ASTRO CITY, AVENGERS) will be taking over the main JLA title starting with JLA #107. Ron Garney will continue across from the current Chuck Austen arc as the regular penciller. Busiek’s first story will be an 8-part story featuring the Crime Syndicate of America. He is currently answering questions on the Official DC Comics Message Board and there is also a b/w preview of his first issue on the DC Website.

What of the rotating creative teams I hear you cry. Well DC is launching a title called JUSTICE LEAGUE CLASSIFIED. It appears to be a cross between the arc style of SUPERMAN/BATMAN and the rotating creative teams and era-jumping of the LEGENDS books. It looks like JLC will become home to all those previously announced JLA stories. Creators are thought to include:

  • Grant Morrison & Ed McGuinness – Previously rumoured by Rich Johnston and confirmed at SDCC. Morrison will lead off the new title with six-part story that is rumoured to feature the Hyperclan.
  • Gail Simone & Jose Garcia-Lopez – Originally announced for the rotating creative teams peroid. Those who have seen the art have been blown away by it.
  • Sequal to FORMERLY KNOWN AS THE JUSTICE LEAGUE – The was originally meant to be a follow up mini-series, but its current status is in question. Kevin Maguire has drawn three issues, but writer Keith Giffen has vowed off working on the DC Universe — seemingly for forever. IDENTITY CRISIS really hit his characters hard so I can’t really blame him, even if I do want to see more sequels.
  • John Byrne – Mention has been made on the John Byrne Forum by the writer/artist that he has had talks with DC about a future JLA project. It wouldn’t be too much of a leap to wonder if it’ll end up in JLC.

Joe Kelly’s JUSTICE LEAGUE ELITE continues for the rest of its 12-issue run. Kelly had previously mentioned a possible sequel if sales warrented it. However penciller Doug Mahnke will be shortly taking up the position as the ongoing BATMAN penciller.

  1. I also read Morrison’s JLC run will deal with the Ultramarines and the their island (at least as a starting off point).

  2. Yeah, in the latest issue of Wizard. I’ve only just read that one – I picked up two massive shipments of comics at once and I still haven’t finished them yet. Morrison’s got so much stuff planned that it’s going to be scary… and expensive.
