Justice League Unlimited
Cartoon Network have announced their line up for the 2004-2005 schedule. It will include an unprecedented 500 new half-hour programming blocks, unfortunately not all of these will be Justice League
Their statement confirmed earlier rumours about a name change for the show with the launch of the new Challenge of the Justice League Justice League Unlimited series.
The following is the Justice League section of their announcement.
The heroes of the Justice League return in August with a new series, Justice League Unlimited, which incorporates a bold new look and a much larger scope. Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and Green Lantern continue to lead the universe’s most powerful superheroes in an effort to stop criminal plots and alien threats that endanger the universe. Now, in Justice League Unlimited, they are joined by an even greater collection of heroes some of whom are well-known, like Supergirl, Green Arrow and the Atom, as well as some that are less familiar, like Booster Gold, Hawk & Dove, Elongated Man, The Question, Mister Miracle, Big Barda and Zatanna. Each half-hour will tell a power-packed story, combining some of the original heroes with new ones as they band together to battle alien invasions, powerful sorcerers, vast shadowy conspiracies and even ancient gods.

Web surfing wipeout
There is nothing like a good case of food poisioning from a well known brand of torpedo sandwiches to really put a crimp on an otherwise fine Saturaday. It does leave one not wanting to do too much, so I’ve taken the chance to dig out a few comicbook related websites…
- Comics2Film: Winging It – An interview with Maria Canals – the voice of the Justice League’s Hawkgirl
- The Fourth Wall – Super-Hero Satire. My particular favourites are the current Super-Hero awards and the Dark Knight Detective
- Bad Movies: Justice League of America – At 21 minutes into this film there is random violence against an innocent rollerscater
- Alan Moore’s “Twilight of the Superhero” – a copy for the legendary cross over that never was. What would of Alan Moore done in a big DC crossover.
- A couple of bookmarks I’ll need when next updating the DC Live Action List – Batman Fan Films and Super Friends – Behind the doors of the Justice League.
- Cold War photos – An unsuspecting GI is caught reading JLA by photographer Vic Damon – pure pop icon image
Comic Book The Movie
I’ve just been watching Mark Hamil’s The Comic Book Movie. I rented it from the local DVD rental place (Rentertainment in Urbana, IL) and it is a two disc set. Normally I only watch the movie disc and then lazily peruse the second disc before sending it back, but this time I took the time to actually watch the extras which isn’t normally possible due to time contraints. The Movie is great fun and comes across as a sort of Spinal Tap for the comicbook community. It is very referential, but a little unfocused in places.
One thing I hadn’t realised is that almost every actor in the film that isn’t playing themselves is actually a well known voice over artist. On the second disc in a video of a panel at a Comic Con that features them all. It is simply brilliant with a lot of in voice highjinks — including both halfs of Pinky and the Brain (Rob Paulsen and Maurice LaMarche). The Panel is compared by the incredibly cool Gary Owens (Roger Ramjet and the original Space Ghost). Its just amazing the different voices these stars have done; their voices have dominated the entertainment of entire generations, but it is not very often that we get to see the real people. If you rent or buy the film please remember to watch this extra.
12.5Julius Schwartz (1915-2004)
Just a moment ago I logged on to the internet to discover the news that Julius Schwartz, the editor of the original Justice League and the genesis of the Silver Age, has died at Winthorp Hospital. Mr Schwartz had been hospitalised with pneumonia shortly before Christmas (see previous post). He was 88 years young.
UPDATE: 09/02/2004 – DC Comics have posted an Official Eulogy for on their website. The eulogy includes a note on how people can donate to the Julius Schwartz Scholarship Fund. DC have also set up an Electronic Book of Rememberance on their message boards.
